Active Living Program

Our legal and policy experts help communities and public health professionals analyze, develop and adopt legal and policy measures that promote physical activity.  Examples of these measures include zoning ordinances that increase access to healthy foods or restrict the proximity of unhealthy food vendors near schools, joint use agreements to open up facilities for children to exercise, and school physical education policies.

Our attorneys are partners in a nationwide legal network to support childhood obesity prevention strategies – the National Policy and Legal Analysis Network to Prevent Childhood Obesity (NPLAN).  As key members of NPLAN, we help develop, implement and defend innovative legal policies designed to prevent obesity by encouraging physical activity.  We also have expertise in cross-cutting legal areas, such as preemption, licensing laws, and First Amendment issues – many of which affect policies in this field.
